This two-disc compilation comprises 86 tunes, performed by 41 world-class Irish
flute players. The stated goal of the album's producer, Kevin Krell,
was that the tracks selected should cover the full spectrum of flute- playing
techniques, regional styles, and repertoire—mission accomplished, Mr
Krell!
The flautists give a solid overview of the current state of Irish
traditional flute playing and its many stylistic dimensions. Carpal
tunnel prohibits a complete listing of every flute player on this disc,
but let's just say that all the big names are on board, including
Matt Molloy, Laurence Nugent, Colm O'Donnell, Michael McGoldrick, Seamus
Egan, Cathal McConnell, Jean Michel-Veillon, Niall Keegan, Seamus Tansey,
Garry Shannon, and many, many others. This is an essential recording
for fans and students of the flute and flute music.
