Robert U. Brown and Robert B. Nicol, the so-called "Bobs of Balmoral," rank right up there with the MacCrimmon family of centuries ago as the finest instructors of piobaireachd in history. Upon retirement from competition, the Bobs set about preserving their legacy of knowledge for posterity, in the form of recorded piping lessons. Their six-volume instructional milestone, Masters of Piobaireachd, was taped between 1972 and 1976; the six volumes have been released individually on CD, and contain recorded lessons with instruction on the playing of each piece, the singing of each piece in canntaireachd, and a rendition played by one of the Bobs on his set of Great Highland Bagpipes. With such top-level playing supplied on this disc by Nicol and Brown, you don't need to be studying piobaireachd to enjoy these flawless renditions of the classic repertoire. Both men passed away in the 1970s, but their enduring legacy, as captured on these CDs, lives on.
